چکیده

The pose detection of three-dimensional (3-D) objects from two-dimensional (2-D) images is an important issue in computer vision and robotics applications. Specific examples include automated assembly, automated part inspection, robotic welding, and human robot interaction, as well as a host of others. Eigendecomposition is a common technique for dealing with this issue and has been applied to sets of correlated images for this purpose. Unfortunately, for the pose detection of 3-D objects, a very large number of correlated images must be captured from many different orientations. As a result, the eigendecomposition of this large set of images is very computationally expensive. In this work, we present a method for capturing images of objects from many locations by sampling S appropriately. Using this spherical sampling pattern, the computational burden of computing the eigendecomposition can be reduced by using the Spherical Harmonic Transform to “condense” information due to the correlation in S. We propose a computationally efficient algorithm for approximating the eigendecomposition based on the spherical harmonic transform analysis. Experimental results are presented to compare and contrast the algorithm against the true eigendecomposition, as well as quantify the computational savings.

Eigendecomposition of Images Correlated on , , and Using Spectral Theory

Eigendecomposition represents one computationally efficient approach for dealing with object detection and pose estimation, as well as other vision-based problems, and has been applied to sets of correlated images for this purpose. The major drawback in using eigendecomposition is the off line computational expense incurred by computing the desired subspace. This off line expense increases dras...

Discrete Spherical Harmonic Transforms: Numerical Preconditioning and Optimization

Spherical Harmonic Transforms (SHTs) which are essentially Fourier transforms on the sphere are critical in global geopotential and related applications. Among the best known strategies for discrete SHTs are Chebychev quadratures and least squares. The numerical evaluation of the Legendre functions are especially challenging for very high degrees and orders which are required for advanced geoco...

Complete Moment Invariants and Pose Determination for Orthogonal Transformations of 3D Objects

It is well known that for the simpler problem of constructing translation invariants of grey scale images (1D, 2D or 3D) central moments can be used. There are plain closed formulae expressing them in terms of the ordinary geometrical moments. Moreover, central moments are ordinary moments of the properly normalized image. In this paper we present moment invariants for the more involved problem...

Spherical harmonic analysis and synthesis for global multiresolution applications

On the Earth and in its neighborhood, spherical harmonic analysis and synthesis are standard mathematical procedures for scalar, vector and tensor fields. However, with the advent of multiresolution applications, additional considerations about convolution filtering with decimation and dilation are required. As global applications often imply discrete observations on regular grids, computationa...

Application of Polar Harmonic Transforms to Fingerprint Classification

Accurate object classification is often confounded by the variation of the pose of the object. We show in this chapter how a set of recently introduced transforms, called the Polar Harmonic Transforms (PHTs), can be used to produce a set of features for rotation invariant fingerprint representation. For accurate classification, fingerprint images often need to be corrected for rotational differ...
